Backcountry Skiing

Beyond the Lift Lines

Teton Pass towers just above the ranch, at the center of some of the most storied backcountry terrain in the country. Above the road, the range opens into wide alpine bowls, long treed drainages, and ridgelines that catch the first and last light of the day — terrain earned by boot pack and skin tracks, skied by locals and visitors alike for generations. Beyond the Pass, similar terrain extends into Grand Teton National Park and just outside Grand Targhee’s boundary, each stretch of mountain with its own character, all within an hour of the ranch.

Some skiers head into this terrain on their own, with the right training and gear in hand. Others hire a guide, who brings local knowledge of current conditions and can put a group on terrain suited to its ability. Either way, a daily avalanche forecast is essential reading before heading out.
